Janice Kelley passed into her Father-Mother's loving arms on January 6th.
Janice was a life-long resident of Hemet. Her first and last days were at the family's home among the citrus groves in Bautista Canyon. She was a star athlete at Hemet High School and a pioneer in the early days of girls cross country and track. Janice was also an excellent student, graduating with honors and a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
With thoughts of joining the family business, Janice achieved a degree in Ag Business Management from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo - again graduating with honors. Back in Hemet in 1982, she signed on as a volunteer, coaching distance runners at Hemet High School. Her love for coaching led her to a career in teaching P.E. - first at Ramona Elementary and then Hemet High.
As head cross-country coach, she loved motivating her athletes and drawing out the potential she saw in each of them. She encouraged them to dig deep and tap into a strength they had never known. But it was not all hard work. Making running fun was important to her, so there were run-swim-breakfast parties at her house, ultimate frisbee workouts and week-long, team-bonding camps at Mammoth Lakes. The team sold peaches each fall as a major fund-raiser to help finance running camps and races as far away as Hawaii!
During summer break, Janice often enjoyed spending time with her brother and sister in Idaho. She made an effort to travel with each niece and nephew individually, to get to know them better. It was always a special time when Aunt Janice came to visit.
While we no longer see Janice in the form that we once knew we will continue to see her in the lives that she touched as a coach, mentor, friend, and loved member of our family. Run in Peace Janice.
